Challenge

Built in the center of Helsinki in 1921, the Maalaistentalo House had last been renovated in 1998 - 1999. The spaces no longer supported modern ways of working. The traditional office setting with own workstations for each employee did not work. The focus of the renovation was on improving communication, cooperation and innovation as well as creating shared norms for working.

Benefit

The design was based on the feedback from personnel and on creating a versatile, ergonomic and acoustically sound office space that could be modified if needed. To better understand the needs, workshops were held with both top management and employees in which the current state, challenges and goals for the renewal were discussed.

Inspiration for the design was drawn from the Finnish nature, warmth of wood and the 1920s when the Maalaistentalo House was built. Carefully selected color palette, innovative materials, versatile furniture and layouts as well as various images of nature add character to the space. Interior choices were selected from domestic or Scandinavian designers when possible and Finnish carpenters crafted the fixed furniture. Some of the previously owned furniture were incorporated into the new design.
