Sustainability guides our design from start to finish.
With Kohina’s sustainability process, we ensure that every project is driven by a sustainable and environmentally friendly mindset. Our 4D Sustainability Process covers all stages—from defining goals to design and implementation.

Kohina’s 4D Sustainability Process.
RE-Define – Define vision and goals
We set clear sustainability goals with the client, aligning with ecological, ethical, and social values. Progress is tracked with measurable indicators.
RE-Discover – Research, analyze, and explore opportunities
We identify ways to enhance material efficiency, reusability, and energy optimization. Together with the client, we select solutions that reduce environmental impact.
RE-Design – Develop sustainable solutions
We design spatial solutions with sustainability at the core. We choose environmentally sustainable materials and transparently calculate CO₂ emissions to create both functional and ecologically responsible spaces.
RE-Deliver – Ensure and evaluate results
We ensure that plans are implemented and sustainability goals are met. A final sustainability report verifies results and confirms objectives are met.
Carbon Footprint Calculation to Support Responsible Decision-Making.
We provide carbon footprint calculations for projects, using tools that assess environmental impacts and support data-driven, cost-effective decisions. Our methods follow the Finnish Ministry of the Environment’s low-carbon assessment and FIGBC guidelines for spatial planning.
Carbon footprint per square meter (kgCO₂e/m²)
This figure allows comparison of environmental impacts across different projects and spaces on a per-square-meter basis.
Total emissions (tCO₂e)
This figure enables comparison of total environmental impacts across projects and spaces.
10-year carbon footprint (kgCO₂e/m²/a)
This estimate highlights the sustainability of the spatial plan in the short term, considering the need for rapid changes.
50-year carbon footprint (kgCO₂e/m²/a)
A long-term perspective emphasizes the durability of spaces and the significance of materials’ lifecycle.

We actively promote sustainable construction.
Our carbon footprint analysis provides clear insights into the environmental impact of your project. For example, in the Tampere Energy renovation, key emission sources were:
36% Special fixed furniture
30% Electrical components
18% Flooring materials
14% Standard fixed furniture
By analyzing emissions across the building’s lifecycle and by component, we help you make data-driven, sustainable decisions and reduce your project’s environmental impact.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality by 2030.
Kohina is dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality in its operations by 2030. We are actively participating in the Finnish Chamber of Commerce’s first climate program, where we have measured our carbon footprint (Scope 1&2). Here’s our progress and roadmap towards sustainability:
2023: 12.2 tCO₂e – Our carbon footprint for the year (Scope 1&2).
By 2027: 50% emission reduction – Our target to halve emissions by 2027.
By 2030: Full carbon neutrality – Our commitment to achieving full carbon neutrality in our operations.
We will continue to report our progress annually to the Chamber of Commerce’s sustainability board, ensuring our operations are both sustainable and environmentally friendly. This journey also serves as an example of integrating responsibility into business practices.
